vale house
Adelaide’s earliest colonial residence, Vale House has been lovingly restored to offer all the luxuries we expect today with all the charm of days gone by.
Built in the mid 1850’s and now adapted into four separate Heritage Apartments promoting the period features of the building plus a gallery of early artworks
Vale House is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register and The National Estate.
After being purchased in 1853 by Philip Levi, a well known influential businessman and pastoralist, Vale House became a popular centre of social activity for the Adelaide gentry.
The spacious rooms and elegant ballroom hosted celebrations of all descriptions. Many a red jacketed rider enjoyed a stirrup cup under the shade of the enormous Morten Bay Fig tree, before setting out on the many fox hunts that began at Vale House.
Vale House remained in the Levi family until 1948 when Philip’s sole surviving niece left the property to the Walkerville Council.
