While camping and caravan holidays are one of the more inexpensive ways to holiday, certain expenses can quickly add up if you’re not careful – fuel costs being one of them! Below are our top five tips to keeping this cost down & saving money:

1. Give your engine and tyres a health check

It might sound like common sense, but a healthy engine and properly pressured tyres can make all the difference on reserving your fuel usage, meaning fewer fuel stops and saving you money!

2. Plan the most effective route

Use a good quality GPS and check your journey before you leave for any hold-ups, accidents or roadworks. All of these things can impact the amount of time you spend on the road, equating to using up fuel. Plan in advance to save time and money.

3. Pack economically & ergonomically

The more weight you’re carrying, the more fuel you’ll use, consider when you’re packing and only take what you need.  Also consider the aerodynamics of what you are towing. A pop top caravan, camper trailer, or full size van with the bed at the front so the roof can be more aerodynamic are sensible choices. If you need to use the roof racks stack things towards the rear or use an aerodynamic storage unit.

4. Optimise your fuel usage travel speed

Stick to an economical travel speed over long distances to help save on your fuel. 90-100km/h is a recommended speed for optimal fuel usage.

5. Avoid roadhouses

When driving on long journeys, make sure to fill up in larger towns or cities as generally speaking, there are more fuel stations and so more competition to keep fuel prices down. Smaller independent roadhouses will charge more. If you know you are going to need to fuel up in-between towns, you could use a jerry can to purchase fuel at a cheaper fuel station to see you through to the next large town.

There are other ways to save money on fuel – buying on the ‘cheap’ day of the week is an old tip but one that’s tried and tested. This can be difficult when travelling though, so the best way to save money is to be prepared, mindful and organised.
